A³ is a Design Factory Melbourne initiative, which builds on earlier Challenge Based Innovation (CBI) pilots at IdeaSquare CERN, focused around using design innovation to develop outcomes that connect CERN technology with societal needs in a tangible way.

There have been multiple editions of CBI, with various university partnerships. Each CBI has different frameworks, team compositions, timeframes and areas of research & development. A³ proposes future solutions for implementation by 2030.

CBI A³ was running from 1.10.2017 to 15.5.2018, culminating to a prototype expo held at CERN introducing the student team results. Their three visits to CERN are documented in the Indico system at https://indico.cern.ch/category/9747/
